The journey of a leaf onto the ground
is not the only path that we should see
the first part of it’s life is upward bound
and then it sits so proudly on the tree.
when we see the leaves in fragile form
it’s hard to think of them as living things
with ups and downs and duties to perform
as lively as a bird beating it’s wings.
The trees above us need leaves just to survive
like fishing nets – they case them out to grow
the more abundant leaves – the more it thrives
and yet at once they shed themselves to slow
so when the fall is finished spring revives
the cycle of the leaves – around they go.
