Breaking the Cycle

Breaking the cycle of taking risks
Is a risk.
Being right only works when you know you’re right —
Like calling the winner of a race after the last horse crosses the line.

“You only like the risk because it’s a drug!”
That’s only partially true —
I only use the risk like a drug to save me from having to listen to you.
Having to listen to you talk.
Having to listen to you preach.

“The risk is your escape hatch from hard work!”
That’s a crock of sh*t!
Being on the edge — on the line — all the time is hard work.
The hardest work of all.
It challenges your whole being, vertically:
From the brain
To the gut
To the *ss
To the feet.
“Stay!” — “Ouch!” — “Stay put!” — “RUN! RUN! RUN!”

Taking a right turn on red isn’t a risk, it’s a rule.
Taking a left turn on red is driving!
Not stopping at a stop sign in the dead of night is driving!
Letting a row of nuns and orphans cross the street unharmed is not a courtesy,
Not social mores —
It is a risk!
A risk that one of them — all of them? — will grow into the Anti-Christ
That consumes the gladness of the entire world for no more than a sick thrill.
Kill ’em all if you want to stay safe.
Let them walk on if you want to live on the edge.

Read it. Don't read it. I don't really care anymore.
